We are all leaders! Every human in whatever sphere he finds himself is a leader, be it in Marriage, at the office, in the neighborhood . We all have been created with leadership potential. Unfortunately, many people have the wrong sense of leadership and the very purpose of it. Because of this, more  people are driven by egoistic and selfish ambition to be recognized and widely acclaimed.

There are many definitions of leadership, but one of the most basic and highly significant definition is that Leadership is the ability to lead others by influence. If this definition is true and we all have had instances where we exercised influence over a situation, person or place, then we are all leaders.

In saying that we all are leaders, the first question that will arise in the mind of anyone is, if we all are leaders, then who will be the follower? The very thought that there has to be followers for a leader to be a leader is highly misleading. The purpose of leadership is not to have followers, it is produce leaders.

LEADERS OF LEADERS

The ultimate goal of true leadership is not followers but leaders. It’s okay to have followers, followers often spring up when one is highly effective as a leader. But it is wrong to have so many followers without the consciousness of making them leaders who can go out and influence their world. Effective leadership is the ability to release the potential of others and inspire them to fulfil that potential.

If as a leader, you always have to be around to make things right, then perhaps your leadership isn’t complete. Until your followers are able to lead others and achieve results without your presence but with your guidance, then your work isn’t fully registered as a leader.

The basic distinction of a leader of leaders is the ability to create a platform through which he leads, this platform is also one he surrenders to the people he leads (if need be) to further effect change. This platform should live, breathe, and change over time in a consistent framework, to meet the needs of leadership in his group.

Conclusion

Leadership is about other people fulfilling their potential and being at their best, but it starts with you, the leader. You cannot give what you don’t have. If you are courageous, confident and highly influential, you will give courage, confidence and influence.

AUTHORITY FIGURES

You will agree with me that whoever you listen to and most cases you cannot give a reply is an authority. Such people could be Clergy men who you listen to their sermon and cannot give a feedback.  We could also classify our favorite celebrities, mentors or people who have attained success in this group. People go to churches, Professional gatherings, training events, career fairs and the likes churches for different reasons, aside from listening to the word, one good reason is to choose mentors and authorities over them. It is often assumed that in such places, you’ll be able to find credible people with rich experiences and wealth of wisdom.

Choosing an authority figure can be challenging especially because such people can come to represent a state of absolute trustworthiness but it is nonetheless important because goals are reached faster, energy is conserved and productivity is increased.

When choosing an authority figure, it is very important to check out how your purpose aligns with the purpose of the person whom you are about to submit to as an authority. There has to be shared values, shared goals, and shared ambition. There is a quote I once heard that says, the best way to lead is by experience, the person whom you chose as an authority figure should be someone who can lead you not just by theoretical knowledge but can look you in the eye and say, ‘I’ve been there before.’ Of course, circumstances surrounding a particular situation are never the same, especially if it cuts across different generations, but the principles and wisdom applied can be relevant to you in whatever generation you belong.

EVALUATING YOUR AUTHORITY FIGURE

Authority figures should be trusted figures, a person who can ensure that purpose is fulfilled without stress however as you go through life, it is important that you continuously evaluate your authorities because the same people who helped you fulfill an important assignment, 5 years down the line, may no longer be relevant to your purpose anymore.

Authority figures must, as a matter of necessity, be evaluated from time to time. Mindset evolves over time and direction changes. When such happens, never feel bad about moving on to people who can help you better.

It is often said that no man is an island of knowledge, therefore, it is absolutely good to learn from all the people around you. Benchmark all that you have learnt however from what you learn from your authority figure. If you intend to take that person on the journey of purpose with you, it is important that you both agree to almost any subject matter.

Ego Management

When Tayo woke up that morning to go to work at one of the leading Oil and Gas Company, it was looking like it was going to be a fine morning. She was ill-prepared for the unfortunate turn of events.

Her constant insubordination to her superior was going to earn her a termination letter. After several attempts and unable to get her to write an apology letter, the HR had to let her go. It was a difficult decision as she was considered an asset to the company, but insubordination wasn’t something the company were ready to accommodate.

There are many sides to a person’s personality, and the ego seeks expression more than any other part of the self, the ego can trick us to believing that it is the most important thing in the universe and as a result, we begin to raise our superiority higher than we ought.

Ego is a good thing because it can open you to full awareness of your whole self. Ego is the part of the identity that is often called the “self.” It expresses itself in self-importance, exaggerated self-opinion, presumption and self-evaluation.

There is nothing wrong with ego in itself because it’s a part of our identity, the problem arises when we begin to have a one-sided, exaggerated self-opinion/importance, which in this case indicates that your ego is more in control than purposeful rational thinking.

Warning signs that your ego is taking control

1.     You feel you are always right

2.     You hate losing and can play dirty if only to win and stay winning

3.     You can’t accept and submit to authorities except it’s you shouting the orders

4.     You always act too serious and can’t laugh at a joke

Why should you keep your ego in check?

“When you place your ego in front of everything else you lose a lot of objectivity. You are blinded by your feelings of superiority and lose touch with the reality. You may think you gain control or extra power/drive by giving in to these emotions, but often the opposite is true” (youhaveacalling.com)

It’s impossible to not be aware of your thoughts, feelings and emotions. The moment the waning signs begin to flash, you should take a sit and reassess your priorities.

How to overcome the ego-syndrome

The important thing is to learn to integrate all of the other interesting and unique parts of your personality into a functioning whole. Here are ways to achieve that:

1.     Realise that everyone is just as important as you are: no one is more or less important than you are. Accept this fact and treat people with respect.

2.     Spend time with other people: life is all about relationships. By appreciating other people who are different from you, you see the beauty in seeking continuous relationship. Rather than judge people from afar, move close and listen to them

3.     Have some reflection time: being able to take time off to ask critical questions and reflect on your beliefs and values can be crucial to managing your ego and keeping it in check.

4.     Submit to authorities: authorities are there to keep us in check as well as guide us in getting the work done. By refusing to submit to authorities, you are making a statement that the people who put the person there didn’t know what they were doing, that you are better suited for the job. But leadership starts from following authorities and learning to follow the appropriate authorities in respect to getting the job done.

Be Purpose Driven

What does it mean to be purpose driven?

It means to be moved by something so strong it forms the core of your life, everything else, education, marriage, relationships, and even finances all move to the rhythm of this strong force called purpose.

5 Steps To Living A Purpose Driven Life

Success comes from giving meaning to your life and your actions. "By success I don’t mean anything related to money, power or status. What I mean by successful is an act or person that is aligned with pursuing one’s highest possible potential. If you achieve that kind of success, the money, power and status is more likely to follow." (addicted2success.com)

So, what are the steps to living a purpose driven life that ensures success?

1. Focus: The Pareto Principle, which teaches the 80/20 rule says 80% of our success comes from 20% of concentrated effort, in this case as a result of Focus. This means that if you're focus, you'll always achieve up to 80% of your set goals.

2. Passion: Passion is the oil of gladness we feel everything we pursue a meaningful project. Passion makes difficult task super easy. To live a purpose driven life, there has to be passion, it's the energy that drives a project beyond the call of duty.

3. Set SMART goals: SMART goals are goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time bound. By setting SMART goals, you have succeeded in reducing production time yet increasing your productivity immensely.

4. Get Organized: An unorganized schedule mirrors an unorganized life. When you starts to organize the seemingly insignificant things such as your desk, your wardrobe, your meeting time and dates and etc. you realize that many things will fall in place. You will no longer have to worry about those things, instead your focus shifts to how you can be more productive.

5. Celebrate small achievements: Celebrating small achievements has its magic in that it boosts our confidence to take on bigger projects. The mind begins to think more purposeful, 'if I could achieve this, then I can certainly achieve that!'
